That’s understandable, but I guess try and think about things from his perspective? Being so naive and innocent to the world (he didn’t even know what blood was), being not entirely human (I don’t want to totally spoil you in case you don’t know this yet), being so young and having previously had Karoku as his only (not to mention possibly first) friend— he’s going to be dependent on the few people he’s close to.

But if you do try that and are still annoyed by him, that’s okay. He’s just not your cup of tea. There are plenty of other great characters and things to like about the series overall~ I hope you’re able to enjoy it. ;w;

Out of curiosity, why does he annoy you? Cutesy kid characters tend to annoy the hell out of me, but I’ve personally found Nai to be extremely likable. If you’ve tried watching the series before and are only going off interpretations the anime has given you, I recommend you read the manga.

IMO, yeah, it’s worth reading. The manga fleshes out the development of characters more and you get to see more of their interactions, plus more of other characters. Nai is a main focus, though, so you won’t really be able to avoid him.
